Main Course

Known as a main course in Ireland and the UK and an entrée in some regions such as the U.S., serves as the centerpiece of a meal, delivering the most substantial and satisfying portion of food. It typically follows lighter starters like appetizers or soups and precedes dessert, anchoring the dining experience with its heft and complexity.
Main courses often balance flavors, textures, and nutrition, featuring a protein—such as meat, or fish —paired with complementary sides like vegetables, grains, or starches. The main course aims to leave diners full and content, both physically and culinarily.
From a cultural standpoint, Irish main courses are hearty and satisfying. Many of them feature meat alongside potatoes, such as Guinness Beef Stew or Shepherd’s Pie.
This part of the meal carries social and emotional weight. It’s the dish people linger over, discuss, and remember, they are often tied to family recipes. Main courses can be quickly and simply prepared for a weeknight dinner to a more formal affair for a dinner party with guests.
Don’t consider the main course as just food on a plate; it’s the moment where flavor, sustenance, and connection happen.
