Frozen Egg Rolls in Air Fryer

Frozen Egg Rolls in the Air Fryer are a convenient snack, appetizer and Game Day necessity. Served with your choice of dipping sauce, these Frozen Egg Rolls are easy to make. Just put them in the Air Fryer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, right?

I’m going to say wrong. I did a little experimenting to find the perfect amount of cooking time at exactly the right temperature, and I’ll give you a clue – the manufacturer’s instructions were not the best!

Below you’ll find out the best way to prepare Frozen Egg Rolls in the Air Fryer.

Ingredients

  • Frozen Egg Rolls: any brand or flavor
  • Dipping sauce: I chose hot mustard and sweet chili sauce.

Time and Temperature

Table Showing Results of Frozen Egg Rolls in Air Fryer

The Pagoda brand of Frozen Egg Rolls were used in this recipe. As the same Egg Roll was used for each cooking temperature, this little experiment could not judge flavor, as this was consistent, or was it? (See the final approach of temperature and timing for notes on taste.)

The Air Fryer used was Cooks 3 ½ Quart capacity.

These results are absolutely subjective, but we (my family) tried to be as objective as possible!

Temperature:Time:Comments:
350 degrees F. Manufacturer’s instructions. 14 minutes total. 7 minutes each side.Not golden brown.
Could be crispier.
Only the ends are crispy.
Hot inside.
360 degrees F.10 minutes. This hotter temperature meant the Egg Rolls did not need to be turned.
Browner than the first one at 350 degreesF.
Filling is juicy leaving the inside of the Egg Roll wrapper a little gluey / gummy.
340 degrees F. / 400 degrees F.10 minutes at 340, 5 minutes at 400.Egg Rolls not turned.
Deeper golden brown.
Inside Egg Roll wrapper not as gluey / gummy.
Filling is hot and a little dry.
400 degrees F. 10 minutes.Egg Rolls not turned.
Golden brown in color.
Filling has the right amount of moisture.
400 degrees F. 10 minutes.Egg Rolls not turned.
Brushed first with olive oil.
The Egg Rolls seemed to inflate / open up a little.
Golden brown in color.
Filling has the right amount of moisture.
Better taste, possibly due to addition of oil.

Conclusion

From the table, it is clear that the last approach, cooking them at 400 degrees F. for 10 minutes, brushed with oil, was the best in terms of color, the level of moisture in the filling and even the appearance, with them puffing up a little. Even though taste was not being judged because the same brand and flavor of Egg Rolls was being used, it would appear that the brushing on of olive oil possibly enhanced the taste. This is the timing and temperature I would recommend for Frozen Egg Rolls.

Flexibility

I chose the Pagoda brand of Egg Roll for this recipe. It is one of the leading brands, but the reason I chose it, was because they are made with natural pork. In addition to the tender pork, freshly-cut cabbage, carrots, onions and celery there are a lot of enrichment additives in them. These enrichment additives present on the ingredient’s list are to replace the nutrients that were lost during processing. The wheat and durum flours, used to make the Egg Roll wrapper have folic acid, riboflavin, and iron added back in after processing. This is intended to restore the original vitamin levels. Upon further research, I found that even Egg Rolls sold at Whole Foods contain these enrichment additives. I found it impossible to find organic Egg Rolls.

Any flavor of Egg Roll will work, choose your favorite flavor. Remember all vegetable options are available too.

Dipping sauces are a way of making your Frozen Egg Rolls in the Air Fryer unique and fun. Choices for dipping sauces include:

  • Sweet chili sauce: made with sugar, tomato paste, chilies, salt, spices and garlic powder, easily purchased in supermarkets.
  • Chinese hot mustard: a popular dipping sauce that is pungent, spicy and strong in taste.
  • Hot chili oil: a delicious, dark red, viscous oil.
  • Duck sauce: an orange / red colored sauce that is sweet and sour in flavor.
  • Hoisin sauce: made from fermented soybean paste, with sesame seeds, garlic, caramel, chili pepper and spices added.

Uses for Frozen Egg Rolls in the Air Fryer

As these Egg Rolls are Frozen, they can be grabbed from the freezer and used at anytime for anything. They are especially convenient for lunches and quick snacks. They can be appetizers for Game Day or before an Asian themed meal. All hungry teens will that you for these!

Storage

Store already cooked Egg Rolls for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat them in the air fryer for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees F. Check the internal temperature using a digital thermometer. When 165 degrees F. has been reached, then the Egg Rolls are ready.

A Tip From Me

One thing I learned about preparing this post, was the manufacturer’s directions do not always give the best result. Sometimes you just have to experiment, like I did!

Got Questions?

I’ve got answers – I hope!

  • Should I thaw the Frozen Egg Rolls before Air Frying them? No need to, place them in the Air Fryer and cook them according to the directions above in the ‘Time and Temperature’ section.
  • Are Frozen Egg Rolls healthy? They’re not a health food, but there are worse things to eat. Buy organic (if you can find them) or natural Egg Rolls, then air fry them for a healthier choice.
  • Are fresh Egg Rolls easy to make? Yes, refer to my recipe Reuben Egg Rolls to see how easy they are. There’s other ingredients listed that you can use if you don’t have corned beef and cabbage.
